Assessment of Ultraviolet A Protective Effect of Several Sunscreens with Candida Albicans Test

Abstract
1. Objective:
@EN My intent was to develop a new in vitro method assessing UVA protective effect of topical sunscreens.
@ES 2. Methods and Materials:
@EN Filter paper discs containing one of 8-MOP solutions at a different concentration were placed on a Sabouraud glucose agar plate on which suspension of Candica albicans had been evenly spread. The test compound(the sunscreen or base) was
applied
to
the cover of a Sabouraud glucose agar plate at a dosage of 2 ml/cm*. Fifteen J/cm* of UVA was administered to each plate. After 48 hours culture, the Candida-free zone around each disc was checked and the phototoxic protection factor(PPF) was
calculated.
@ES 3. Results:
@EN Each of the PPF of control. Hydrophilic ointment base, bezophenone, PABA, and Covermark was 1, 1. 1, 5 and 250, respectively. The PPF of Sundown 30 could not be calculated because Candida free zone was not observed up to 5% concentration.
@ES 4. Conclusion:
@EN This method may be useful to screen UVA protective effect of topical sunscreens
